New teachers (cont.)

My name is Joe Benson Waro. I studied at UPNG and I hold a degree in Education (Language Major and Social Science Minor). One of my other interests is teaching mathematics in grades 7 to 9. I have been teaching in the Western Highlands Province and in the Enga, most recently at Sir Tei Abal Secondary School (Wabag). My hobbies/ interests are student counseling, walking (sight seeing) and reading books.

Mr. Waro is our Secondary English teacher (Grades 9 to 12) and we are grateful that he made the decision to join our faculty.

Education reform

This year, we will implement the new outcomes based curriculum. An outcomes approach identifies the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that all students should achieve or demonstrate at a particular grade in a particular subject (the learning outcomes). The teacher is responsible for identifying, selecting and using the most appropriate teaching methods and resources to achieve these learning outcomes.

Outcomes-based education has two purposes. They are:

- to equip all students with knowledge, understandings, skills, attitudes and values needed for future success;

- to implement programs and opportunities that maximize learning.

The three premises (assumptions) of OBE are:

- all students can learn and succeed (but not on the same day or in the same way);

- success breeds further success;

- schools can make a difference.

Students Representative Council

This week, the students from Grade 8 to 12 will elect a Students Representative Council. The SRC will be co-responsible for a proper running of the school and it is an opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills.

Lunch for day students

As day students need to be ready for pick up early in the morning, parents sometimes lack the time to prepare a proper lunch. Starting this week Monday        (22 February), day students can have a healthy lunch in the Mess Hall at a cost of   K 40.00 a week. Lunch vouchers (only for 5 days a week) will be for sale in the office and need to be paid in advance.
